How much can I save with solar energy?

The more you spend on electricity, the more you can save. Purchasing a solar system will generally save you the most over the lifetime of the system (which can be up to 40 years!). The amount of time it takes for the system to pay for itself through savings usually ranges between 5-8 years. However, you can also acquire solar for $0 down and free installation with a lease or loan and make payments that are substantially less than your current average electric bill, which also saves you money and helps protect you from rising electric rates for 20 years or more.

1. Light from the sun is collected by solar panels

The photons in the light knock electrons free from atoms in the solar panel, and that generates a flow of electricity. With SunPower panels, that electricity is conducted with copper on the protected back of the panel, rather than with screen-printed metal paste on the front. That makes the photon collection area larger (and more productive), and also means there’s no weakening or breaking of the material conducting the electricity.

2. An inverter converts DC power to AC power

The electricity created by solar panels is DC current, and it’s changed to AC current by an inverter connected to your system, which is what home appliances run on. This happens instantly and continuously, and when it’s a SunPower AC panel, both the panel and the microinverter are covered by the same SunPower comprehensive 25-year warranty.

3. AC electricity is delivered to power your home

Your solar system is tied into your electrical panel and allows your home to access all the power your solar system creates. If your home needs more or it’s nighttime and your solar system isn’t producing power, your home can still pull power from the grid. This is a seamless operation, and you’ll never even know the difference.

4. Surplus energy is delivered to the grid and credited to your bill

Whenever your solar system creates more energy than your home needs, it’s “pushed” onto the grid and you receive credit for it. At the end of 12 months, all the back and forth is reconciled and you receive a true-up. At that point, you will either receive some compensation from the utility company, or you will owe a bit, depending on if you made more than you used, or used more than you made. You will also be able to see how you are trending as you go along, either through monitoring or by checking your electric bill each month.

Financing and incentives are available to make solar energy for your home or business a reality

Currently, there are multiple ways you can enjoy extra savings as you acquire your solar system. The most important one is the 26% Investment Tax Credit. Homes and businesses can take advantage of this through December 31, 2022. If you purchase a system or acquire it through a loan, this is a direct credit available to you when you pay your taxes. If you get your system through a lease or a third party with a Power Purchase Agreement, you receive the benefit indirectly. For businesses, there are also other advantages including rapid depreciation.
